Issues

We have developed modules using the Katradi method across a range of issues. We implement these modules with our facilitators for client organizations. We also train facilitators from client organizations and adapt the chosen module to the age, gender and local cultural context of their target population.

Gender

Be Shameless Sex & Sexuality Ed

This module is designed for teenagers and breaks the silence on a taboo subject by

knocking down barriers of shame;
providing proper terminology for their bodies;
equipping them with vital decision-making skills; and
creating a safe space for dispelling myths and Q&A.

We also provide training for teachers and facilitators to carry out this module with their classes. An important part of this training is raising awareness about our shame and inhibitions and how destructive they are when passed from generation to generation.

Gender Equality

This module serves the purpose of both raising awareness on the gender divide as well as creating fun ways to bridge it. Young adults learn how society separates boys and girls from a very young age which leads to pervasive and harmful gender stereotypes. For the first time girls and boys talk to each other about the challenges they face because of their gender. They learn the tools to break free and take a pledge to build a more equitable future.

Gender Based Violence (GBV)

This module brings awareness to GBV through

understanding common and uncommon forms of GBV;
learning assertive communication; and
creating support systems.

Often, society condones GBV (marital rape does not exist) and films and older family role models promote passive behavior for women and aggressive behavior for men. In this module, we create safe spaces to promote healthy conversation between genders.

Clients include Banwasi Ashram, Faith Foundation, Manav Sadhna, Namma Nalanda Vidyapeeta School, Project KHEL, URJA and Vidyodaya.

Whatever the target group (children or adults) or issue (substance abuse, gender equality) life-skills development must play a central role.

Literacy

This module teaches Tamil through Kattaikkuttu. This is a vibrant traditional performing art from Tamil Nadu integrating spoken theater, dance and music. In Tamil Nadu it is often difficult for children to read and write in Tamil because the words they use to speak are not the words that are written down. This module uses techniques of Kattaikkuttu, especially the comic roles to help children bridge this gap.

Substance Abuse

This module raises awareness about alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The strength of this module is that we create an environment where young people speak openly about why they take substances despite the physical, mental and societal implications. They truly feel that we understand the pressures they go through (e.g., bullying, peer pressure, stress) and this helps them build techniques to say no.

Community-based Conservation

Conservation of diminishing forests and endangered species cannot happen without the involvement of the communities that have traditionally lived off the land. Deprived of their access to the forest and its produce, this module helps them understand the importance of their role in conservation. We also help conservation agencies explore finding alternate means of livelihood for adult members of the community. We create education programs for children using traditional folklore and music that reconnects them with the land.

Recycling & Composting

Urban Gardening

This module works on growing nutritious food for the community in the spaces available to them. Participants compost, prepare the earth, sow seeds, and finally celebrate with a harvest festival. Nutritious, organic food helps combat malnutrition endemic in many underprivileged communities today. This module is effective in bringing down aggressive behavior and helping children build positive social skills through teamwork and equal distribution of duties.

Gender/Diversity in the Work Place

Workplaces are now more inclusive hiring more women and people from varied backgrounds. This creates many challenges as communication between genders can be stilted and attitudes between people from different socio-economic backgrounds can be strained. Katradi uses highly effective methods to create situations where people realize their deep rooted biases they are unconsciously carrying into the workplace. Using sports, music and theater Katradi helps people understand their biases and build healthier forms of interaction.

Communities in Conflict

This module uses high-energy dance, sport, theater and trust building exercises to bring communities together. The conflict is not discussed until participants have gone through peak bonding experiences as a group. When we finally open discussion there is the realization that everyone has been negatively impacted by the conflict. Participants work together to build concrete strategies to move forward.

Identity

This module invites participants to reflect on their identity based on shared values rather than stereotypes created by language, religion, caste, and nationality. An integral component in this module is the bonding and trust building process between participants from different communities using challenging circus and acrobatic games. Building on the trust and positive energy created in the workshop space participants then explore each other's realities from a newfound position of empathy.
